Cheslie Kryst was born on April 28, 1991, in Jackson, Michigan, to a Polish-American father Rodney Kryst, and African-American mother April Simpkins. She died when she was 30 years old. Charlie was raised by her mother and stepfather, David Simpkins, along with her siblings Asa Kryst, Chandler Kryst, Jet Simpkins, Brooklyn Simpkins, and Page Kryst. The family relocated from Michigan to Charlotte, North Carolina, and then to Rock Hill, South Carolina, before settling in Fort Mill.

Charlie went to Northwestern High School in Rock Hill and was crowned Miss Freshman there. She graduated from Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill, South Carolina, USA, as Miss Fort Mill High School in 2009. She graduated from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and human resource management. During her time at university, Charlie was also a track and field athlete. She won the finals of the 1L Trial Bar Competition.

She returned to pageantry after a hiatus of several years, and competed twice for the Miss North Carolina crown, landing in the top ten on her first attempt and as the first runner-up on her second.

Kryst finished as the fourth runner-up in Miss North Carolina USA 2017. She competed again the following year, placing in the top 10, before being crowned Miss Metrolina at Miss North Carolina USA 2019. Caelynn Miller-Keyes, the departing titleholder, was unable to attend due to filming season 23 of The Bachelor, thus she was crowned by Kaaviya Sambasivam, Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2018.

With her victory, 2019 became the first year in which women of African descent won all four main pageants in the United States. Other winners included South African Zozibini Tunzi (Miss Universe 2019), Nia Franklin (Miss America 2019), and Kaleigh Garris (Miss Teen USA 2019). Kryst was previously crowned Miss North Carolina USA 2019, becoming the third woman from the state to be crowned Miss USA.

Kryst was nominated for Outstanding Entertainment News Program at the 47th Daytime Emmy Awards in 2020 for her work as an Extra correspondent in New York. She was nominated for the same award again the following year, at the 48th Daytime Emmy Awards.
