Roy Bryant was the owner of Bryant’s Grocery, but he rose to prominence as a criminal after being jailed for murder. He was one of two persons that lynched Emmett Till, an African-American 14-year-old boy.

Emmett Till wolf-whistled at Roy Bryant’s wife, Carolyn Bryant, then, according to some stories, gripped her by the waist and whispered unintelligible phrases. The encounter occurred in a supermarket owned by their relatives in Money, Mississippi, and resulted in Emmett’s gruesome murder.

Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam intended to teach Emmett a lesson, but instead killed him. The incident drew national notice, owing mostly to prejudice against the African-American population.

From 1954 to 1968, the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Emmett’s body was discovered mangled, and his funeral was held in an open casket, as his mother had requested. The entire world witnessed the terrifying spectacle.

Following the incident, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam faced trial, and while Milam confessed to the crime, Roy never did. Later, the African-American community stopped patronizing their establishments, causing them to fail.

Carolyn Bryant acknowledges in “The Blood of Emmett Till,” a book about the tragedy, that her remarks during the trial in 1955 were invented.
